Get some culture on in your PJs (an an ode to my mom)

My mom would be jumping for joy right now. She was an visual artist, but even more than that she lived and breathed creativity. To her, art was religion. Spirituality. Art and music brought you closer to God. I grew up on gallery visits around Soho in the 80s and listening to WQXR every weekend. She was a special lady, my mom. A powerhouse. She started a "classic music club" in high school, and left home in Brooklyn at 17 to obtain a scholarship from Yale for fine arts (she did and she was one of the first women grads). She designed textiles for YSL and flew herself to Paris. She worked for Missoni (and kept the knits for me). She would always tell me, "If you have a good idea, call the company and tell them about it. Just pick up the phone and call the CEO. What do you have to lose?"
When my daughter, Uma, was born she felt that all "kids" art stuff was crap and decided it needed to be more high brow. She created her own blog that's still alive and well...ARTBUS...(take a peek to get to know my momma a bit). As a little girl, Uma would go on field trips with mom to the Met or Moma and play "find that painting" from postcards from the gift shop (it's on her blog). She's been gone a year, but connecting to art and classical music take me to a place of connection with her in my soul.
As we look for ways to nourish our creativity while confined, it might help to take a moment and get our culture on. Enjoy a cup of tea, walk through a museum, learn about an new artist, or watch La Boheme from our couch.
